European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says
The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
