Al Gore has suggested that fear of receiving criticism from Donald Trump may have prompted the Microsoft founder to step back on his environmental advocacy.

Describing Trump as “an exceptionally unethical commander-in-chief”, Gore cautioned that the president’s promotion of fossil fuels and withdrawal from clean power is “badly damaging” the American economic system.

Climate Damage and Financial Consequences

In an conversation at the UN climate conference in Belém, Gore noted, “The president’s currently causing a lot of damage on the climate. Perhaps the biggest harm he’s doing is to the U.S. itself.”

He emphasized that China is now exporting green technology with a cumulative export value that surpasses all fossil fuel exports from the United States, a pattern that is speeding up rapidly.

The Philanthropist’s Surprising Reversal

Bill Gates, formerly a prominent advocate in environmental efforts, recently stated for moving the environmental emergency to a lower priority, to focus on global wellness.

Gore voiced bewilderment at this change, saying, “The notion of delaying on climate further puzzled environmental experts that I know and respect.”

“Yeah, Trump loves it. It’s possible what Gates was shooting for.”

Gore observed that after the president’s return to office, Gates let go of the majority of his environmental team, went to the White House, and lavished praise on Trump.

Concern Over Backlash

Gore proposed that Gates, like other ultra-wealthy business people, may be worried of facing retaliation by Trump. “It’s possible that he is genuinely concerned that the president will target him,” Gore stated.

Trump responded to Gates’ reversal with supportive social media posts.

Gore continued, “The sole positive feedback of what he released last week was from Donald Trump. Yeah, Trump loves it. Perhaps what he intended.”

Challenging a Misleading Dichotomy

Gore underscored that framing the climate crisis and global health crisis as competing priorities is wrong.

“The notion that there is a binary choice between wellness and the environment has been roundly rejected by virtually every scientist in this field,” he explained.

“It’s literally insane that governments are requiring citizens to fund the damage of part of humanity’s future.”

Gore highlighted that the Lancet released a report on the same day as Gates’ announcement, detailing the enormous health consequences of inaction on climate.

Advocating for Smarter Investments

Rather than taking money away from environmental initiatives, Gore suggested that Gates should push for repurposing the massive sums spent on fossil fuel subsidies toward wellness and climate solutions.

“Speeding up progress to the environmental emergency is one of the single most effective ways to enhance wellness in the world,” he declared.

Defending the UN Climate Process

Gore strongly supported the UN climate conference process, explaining that they achieve significant results than they are given credit for.

“The Cop process acts as a nucleus for businesses and organizations that assemble every year,” he said. “Numerous groups come up with their own agreements that move things forward.”

“The Cop process itself is one of the principal reasons that the sustainability revolution has shifted into high gear.”

He added that industries and governments are moving forward with new technology and adopting clean power and other low-carbon initiatives.

Positive Progress and Generational Change

Gore highlighted what he sees as a “shift in attitudes” in the United States, with numerous citizens embracing climate action even as the federal government dismantles them.

He warned that Trump might face a “less obsequious” Congress following recent voting losses for GOP contenders.

“There’s a completely false view out there that in some way we are falling behind.”

Gore praised the progressive politician for his successful run for mayor of New York, noting that while he did not agree with some of his ideas, his political skills were impressively on display.

Highlighting Climate Impacts

At the conference, Gore presented delegates with a visual presentation of devastation caused by the climate crisis.

Standing before a large display showing images of recent catastrophes exacerbated by climate change, Gore stated, “It is literally insane that we are letting this persist.”

He spoke passionately while displaying visuals of extreme dry spells in the Amazon, Greenland shedding its ice, and destructive storms in Vietnam, the Caribbean, South America, the Philippines, and the U.S..

“For how much longer are we going to stand by and keep increasing temperatures so that these sort of events get even worse?” he questioned.

Preparing for Climate Impacts

Gore stressed the need to both adapt and mitigate, but cautioned that if this irrational behavior continues—using the sky as an open sewer—some things will be very difficult to cope with.

Promoting Climate Trace

His primary effort at the summit has been to advocate for the Climate Trace project, which tracks planet-heating emissions and harmful substances leading to wellness issues globally.

“We are very excited about these new tools,” Gore stated. “We have got the technology and the deployment models. Some people think we don’t have the government commitment, but as I like to remind people, political will is a replenishable asset.”
